What we see in York
York City is a different job to anywhere else we work. The housing is the oldest in the county — rowhomes and twins, many of them well over a century old, with plumbing that has been added to, patched and partly replaced by a long succession of people over that time.
Two things come up on almost every city call. The first is supply lines: original galvanized, corroded closed, often with sections of copper spliced in at various dates. The second is sewer laterals, which in this part of the city are typically clay laid in short lengths, running under pavements and mature street trees. Both are diagnosable before they become emergencies, and neither should be quoted without someone actually looking.
One thing worth knowing if you are getting quotes: the City of York requires contractors to be registered with its permit office before pulling permits inside city limits. It is a registration rather than a trade exam, but it is real — and if a quote for permitted work does not mention permits at all, ask why before you sign it.
