Four things to do right now
Most of the damage happens in the twenty minutes before anyone arrives. Do what you can of this — and call while you’re doing it.

Shut the water off
Your main shut-off is usually where the line enters the basement — near the meter or on the front wall. Turn it clockwise until it stops. Can’t find it? Call us and we’ll find it with you on the phone.

Open the lowest tap
Once the main is off, open a tap on the lowest floor. That drains what’s left in the pipes down and out, instead of through your ceiling.

Cut the power if water is near it
If water is running near outlets, the panel or the furnace, switch that circuit off at the breaker — but only if you can reach the panel without standing in water. If you can’t, leave it and tell us when we arrive.

Move what matters, then photograph it
Lift boxes off the floor, get anything electrical up high, bucket and towels under the drip. Photograph the damage before you clean up — your insurer will ask.
If you smell gas, do none of the above. Get everyone out of the house, don’t touch light switches, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. We’ll come once they’ve made it safe — that order matters.

What it costs at 2 a.m.
The same as it costs at 2 p.m.
Most plumbers bill time-and-a-half or double time after hours, at weekends and on holidays. We don’t. There is no night rate, no weekend rate and no holiday rate — because a burst pipe doesn’t choose its moment and you shouldn’t be penalised for when yours happened.
What you get instead: a flat price for the whole job, in writing, before anything starts. If we find something worse once we’re into it, we stop and re-quote before carrying on. You are never billed a number you haven’t already agreed to.
